Poste Italiane plan to merge Taranto post office with Brindisi faces regional opposition
Poste Italiane announced it will combine the Taranto provincial post office directorate with the Brindisi directorate. Giampaolo Vietri, a regional councilor for Puglia, has publicly opposed the move, arguing that the Taranto office manages a much larger and more complex service area that includes municipalities such as Ginosa, Castellaneta, Laterza and Manduria. Vietri warned that the merger could lead to staff transfers and the possible emptying of the historic Palazzo delle Poste e Telegrafi in Taranto, a building he described as a symbolic landmark for the community.
Vietri called on the national and regional leadership of Poste Italiane to suspend the reorganisation and to open an immediate dialogue with local trade unions. He said he would use all available institutional tools, including involving the relevant ministry, to obtain the documents related to the proposed restructuring and to assess whether the efficiency criteria cited by the company justify a decision that, in his view, would be detrimental to Taranto’s strategic functions.
