Potash Mine Accident in Súria, Spain Claims Worker’s Life

A 26‑year‑old miner died on Wednesday after a lateral rockfall in the Cabanasses potash mine in the municipality of Súria, Barcelona province. The incident occurred around 11:00 a.m. while the worker was operating next to a continuous miner. The mine, owned by Israeli multinational ICL since 1998, extends 60 km of galleries to a depth of 900 m and employs about 240 workers per shift.

ICL Iberia activated emergency protocols, evacuated the underground site and provided immediate medical assistance. Two other workers received treatment, one was hospitalised in Manresa and the other released after on‑site care. Psychological support teams were dispatched for employees and families. The Catalan Mossos d'Esquadra opened an investigation, collaborating with ICL to determine the cause of the rockfall. The accident follows a 2023 incident at the same mine that killed three geologists.
