Europe faces agricultural and forest crisis amid extreme heat and drought
Europe is facing a severe environmental and economic crisis driven by extreme heat, prolonged drought, and wildfires. The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe reports unprecedented forest mortality across Europe and North America, with pests, diseases, and water shortages affecting up to 73 million hectares of forest.
The agricultural sector is suffering significant losses. In France, corn production is projected to drop by nearly 50 percent, while vegetable yields for broccoli and lettuce have fallen by 60 percent and 35 percent, respectively. In Austria, apple harvests are expected to decrease by up to 30 percent due to water shortages. German hop farmers face potential revenue losses of 100 million euros, and the drought is estimated to impact German GDP by up to 0.4% in the third quarter of 2026.
In response to these climate-driven disruptions, the European Green Party and various climate coalitions are calling for an accelerated European Green Deal and increased investment in resilient infrastructure. Meanwhile, the UN summit on desertification (COP17) in Mongolia concluded without a decisive global agreement on proactive drought management, postponing key decisions to COP18.
