Potato market faces tension due to heat and low yields

The potato market in Austria is facing significant tension due to heatwaves and insufficient rainfall. According to the LKÖ, the early potato season is ending, and yields for subsequent varieties are proving to be weak to very weak. Forecasts for the main harvest are becoming increasingly pessimistic, with potential further reductions expected due to wireworm infestations and tuber damage.

Producer prices have risen as a result. In Northern Austria, table potatoes have recently fetched between 25 and 30 EUR per 100 kg, while prices in Upper Austria were raised to 25 EUR per 100 kg.

In the vegetable sector, summer onion harvests are also facing challenges from high temperatures, leading to firmer prices. Meanwhile, the carrot market in Northern Austria remains balanced, though high temperatures are limiting both consumer demand and stock growth, keeping available supply low.
