Gardening guide: seasonal tips for lawns, vegetables, and harvests

As summer transitions to autumn, gardeners can utilize specific techniques to maintain crops and lawns. To repair lawns damaged by summer heat, experts recommend autumn overseeding in September. This timing leverages warm soil and returning rains to encourage deep root growth without heavy labor.

For vegetable gardeners, late summer presents challenges such as fungal diseases on tomatoes due to temperature fluctuations and dew. To ripen green tomatoes before frost, placing them in a container with an apple can accelerate the process through ethylene gas. Additionally, sowing leafy greens like mâche, spinach, and arugula in early September allows for harvests through winter.

Proper storage and preparation are also vital. Potatoes should be dry-brushed rather than washed before storage to prevent mold caused by moisture infiltration. For household efficiency, potato cooking water can be reused as a natural fertilizer or a thickening agent for soups. Finally, crystallized maple syrup can be easily restored to its liquid state using a gentle bain-marie method.
