Potato prices surge in Europe as Serbian production faces import risks
European potato production has decreased by approximately 25 percent this year, causing industrial potato prices to surge from 30 euros per ton last year to as much as 250 euros per ton in some instances.
While Serbia is not currently experiencing a shortage, the country faces long-term challenges due to a continuous reduction in the land area dedicated to potato cultivation. Ratko Vukićević, president of the ‘Plodovi Srbije’ association, noted that domestic production is no longer sufficient to meet market needs, forcing Serbia to rely on imports for roughly 40 percent of its requirements.
Although this year's Serbian harvest began more favorably than the previous year—which was severely impacted by summer droughts—the upcoming harvest may still require imports. This poses a risk as major European producers are also facing significantly lower yields, potentially limiting the availability of imported quantities.
