Potato storage tips to prevent spoilage

Proper storage is essential for maintaining the freshness of potatoes, a staple food in Germany where individuals consume between 50 and 60 kilograms annually. To prevent spoilage, potatoes should be kept in a cool, dark, and dry location.

According to the Consumer Advice Center NRW, the ideal temperature range is between 4 and 8 degrees Celsius. Temperatures that are too low can cause starch to convert into sugar, making the potatoes taste overly sweet, while temperatures that are too high may cause them to sprout. Additionally, the Consumer Advice Center Bavaria advises against storing potatoes together with onions to prevent premature ripening.
