Pothos plant care: tips for optimal growth and pruning

Proper care for pothos plants involves more than just keeping them alive; achieving optimal growth requires specific environmental conditions. While these plants are known for their resilience and ability to tolerate low light, experts warn that such conditions often lead to a “survival mode” where the plant ceases to produce new leaves or reach its full potential.

To encourage lush, large leaves, pothos should be placed in areas with abundant indirect light, avoiding direct midday sun which can burn foliage. Watering should be timed to allow the substrate to dry significantly between sessions, and using well-draining soil is essential for root health. Additionally, providing a support or tutor can encourage the plant to climb and develop larger leaves.

Pruning is another vital maintenance technique to prevent stems from becoming overly long and sparse. For best results, stems should be cut one to two centimeters above a node—the small bumps on the stem where leaves emerge. Pruning during spring or summer, when the plant is most active, stimulates new lateral growth and can even allow for propagation through water cuttings.
