Pothos plant growth: how light deficiency causes etiolation

The pothos plant (Epipremnum aureum) often shows subtle signs of insufficient light, such as a progressive reduction in the size of new leaves. While the plant is resilient and may appear healthy because it does not wilt immediately, a lack of light can trigger a survival state known as etiolation.

During etiolation, the plant prioritizes stem growth over foliage to reach light sources. This results in long stems with large gaps between nodes (internodes) and sparse, smaller leaves. This process can also lead to the loss of variegation, as the light-dependent patterns on the leaves fade.

To remedy these issues and encourage denser growth, cultivators should move the plant to a well-lit area, preferably near a window while avoiding direct sunlight. Pruning excessively long, leafless stems can also help restore a fuller appearance.
