Puebla, Mexico launches program to protect girls from sexual violence
The Secretariat of Women in the state of Puebla has begun the "Niñas y Adolescentes Libres y Seguras" strategy, funded by the Fondo para el Bienestar y el Avance de las Mujeres (FOBAM). The initiative aims to prevent sexual violence, teenage pregnancy, early unions and forced cohabitation among girls and adolescents. It started in the community of Jesús Nazareno with a mobile information module and house‑to‑house outreach, and includes school activities, training for teachers, health personnel and municipal officials, as well as educational guides, games and materials in indigenous languages. The first phase will expand to Huauchinango and the capital city of Puebla, prioritising the 50 municipalities that have declared gender‑based violence alerts. The program is backed by President Claudia Sheinbaum and Governor Alejandro Armenta Mier, reinforcing coordination among federal, state and municipal authorities to safeguard the rights of children and adolescents.
