Potsdam authorities arrest juveniles amid rise in youth violence
Authorities in Potsdam and Berlin are intensifying efforts to combat rising youth violence and gang-related crime. The specialized investigation group ‘Iuventus’ has recently arrested a 17-year-old and a 15-year-old in connection with various offenses, including dangerous bodily harm and breach of the peace in the Berlin-Kohlhasenbrück area.
Police have also conducted identification measures involving nine other youths aged 14 and 17. Police Director Matthias Ehrchen stated that these arrests serve as a signal that law enforcement and the judiciary are working consistently to address these issues and improve public safety.
The crackdown follows reports of significant violence, including an incident in Berlin-Wannsee where a group of approximately 15 youths attacked three individuals. Local officials, including Tiemo Reimann of the Potsdam Youth Welfare Committee, have noted a concerning increase in the quality and frequency of conflicts involving youth groups over the past year. In response, the city of Potsdam plans to combine law enforcement actions with preventive measures through cooperation with educational institutions and social services.
