Potsdam implements new municipal packaging tax

Potsdam has implemented a new municipal packaging tax effective October 1, targeting single-use containers. Customers are facing additional costs, such as 50 cents for single-use cups and food containers, and 20 cents for disposable cutlery.

Local businesses, including bakeries, kiosks, and restaurants, are passing these costs directly to consumers. Early observations indicate that many establishments are collecting the tax manually, often using separate containers or cash boxes, because existing point-of-sale systems are not yet equipped to process the specific tax levy automatically.
