Potsdam Mayor Noosha Aubel Faces Budget and Service Challenges

Noosha Aubel was elected mayor of Potsdam in a runoff with 72.9% of the vote, while voter turnout was only 42.5%. She assumed office on 24 October 2025 and pledged a transparent, modern and human‑centred administration.

The city inherits a strained municipal budget, long administrative delays, a housing shortage and chronic traffic congestion. A high‑profile kindergarten scandal has drawn criticism after a severely disabled child has been denied a place for more than 1.5 years despite a legal entitlement.

In her first months Aubel has struggled to build consensus in the fragmented city council. A proposal for a creative‑house computing centre attracted support from only four of the 56 councilors, and she suffered a defeat on a water‑supply vote, highlighting the difficulty of governing beyond social‑media appeal.
