Poudre School District proposes closing nine schools
The Poudre School District (PSD) has proposed the closure of nine schools and the consolidation of two others to address declining enrollment and unused classroom capacity. The district reports having approximately 10,000 empty seats, noting that maintaining under-enrolled buildings spreads resources too thin.
The proposed closures include eight elementary schools—Beattie, Irish, Johnson, Putnam, Timnath, Stove Prairie, Red Feather, and Livermore—and one middle school, Blevins. Additionally, Centennial High School and Poudre Community Academy are slated for consolidation.
Superintendent Brian Kingsley stated that demographic shifts are driving these contractions. The plan could significantly impact families, particularly those in remote mountain areas like Red Feather, who may face hour-long one-way commutes.
The recommendation from the Comprehensive Planning Committee is scheduled for formal presentation to the Board of Education on October 13, with a final vote expected on October 27. If approved, the changes would take effect for the 2027-28 school year.
