Poughkeepsie Police report extreme speeding in school zones
The Poughkeepsie Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit has reported extreme speeding violations in local school zones, with drivers clocked at speeds of 71 mph and 75 mph near an elementary school.
Local authorities are increasing enforcement to protect students walking to school and crossing streets. While legislation has been passed to allow the installation of school zone speed cameras in Poughkeepsie—following a bill sponsored by New York State Senator Rob Rolison after a fatal accident involving a crossing guard—the cameras have not yet been installed in the city.
In New York, speeding penalties in school zones vary based on the severity of the violation. Drivers traveling 31 mph or more over the limit can face fines ranging from $360 to $1,200 and between 8 to 11 points on their license.
