Power electronics advancements drive global market growth
The global power supply market is undergoing significant evolution, driven by the needs of data centers, renewable energy, electric vehicles, and industrial automation. Market forecasts suggest the global power supply units market could reach $52.19 billion by 2031, while broader market estimates suggest it may reach $82.1 billion by 2036. Key technological drivers include Gallium Nitride (GaN) and Silicon Carbide (SiC), which enable higher efficiency and power density.
A research team comprising the University of Science and Technology of China, Xidian University, Enkris Semiconductor, and the University of Hong Kong has announced a breakthrough in bidirectional switching. By developing a monolithic bidirectional switch, the team aims to address the limitations of anti-series device configurations, which often suffer from scaling issues in chip area and complexity as voltage rises. This advancement is intended to facilitate the deployment of GaN devices in medium-voltage AC applications, supporting the transition toward electrified transport and expanded digital infrastructure.
