Power outage protests spark unrest in Cuba and Brazil

Residents of Havana, Cuba staged night‑time protests after more than 30 hours without electricity, using cacerolazos and chanting slogans. Activist Orlando Ramírez described the demonstrations as lasting almost three hours and warned that people who speak out are later arrested. The state utility UNE said the national energy crisis stems from damaged thermal plants, maintenance work and fuel shortages, leaving the system at roughly 37% of peak demand.

In Boca Chica, Brazil, community members gathered to demand an end to prolonged blackouts that have lasted up to six days in some neighborhoods. Protesters highlighted the risk to elderly and medically‑dependent residents who rely on electric equipment, and called on the regional distributor EDEESTE for urgent action. Police officers were present to maintain order during the demonstration.
