Power outages disrupt businesses and residents in Enugu and Nasarawa
Electricity supply issues are causing significant economic and social disruptions across parts of Nigeria. In Enugu State, business owners, including welders and pub operators, report that irregular power supply and high generator costs are undermining profitability. Customers have expressed frustration over receiving electricity bills despite inefficient service and have called for more accessible prepaid meters.
MainPower Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MEDL) attributed the decline in Enugu's electricity supply to a drop in power generation, which led the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to implement load shedding.
In Nasarawa State, specifically within the Keffi Local Government Area, a prolonged blackout has been caused by the collapse of three transmission towers along the Karu-Keffi-Akwanga 132kV line. The TCN reported that heavy rainfall and wind on October 7 caused the collapse of towers T78, T79, and T80. This damage has rendered 33kV feeders at the Keffi and Akwanga substations unavailable, hindering socioeconomic activities, small businesses, and student studies. TCN engineers are currently assessing the damage to begin restoration work.
