Chile's southern communities grapple with weeks of power outages and road floods

Heavy rains and a severe frontal system have left several Chilean localities without reliable electricity and disrupted transport. In San Juan – El Tranque, residents were without power for more than 48 hours and complained that the utility CGE failed to respond to calls or provide information. Rural families in Loncoche endured up to eight days of outages; Mayor Alexis Pineda Ruiz urged the national Congress to amend tariff legislation so that distributors that do not meet continuity standards cannot receive rate increases.

The flood‑induced rise of the Estero Grande washed away the access embankments to the Valiente bridge on route N‑309, cutting the road completely until conditions improve. Public works officials confirmed the bridge itself remains sound, but repairs to the approaches await better weather.

Amid the physical impacts, health agencies launched emotional‑support initiatives. The Fonoinfancia program, run by the Subsecretaría de la Niñez, offers free counselling for parents and children coping with flood‑related stress. The Valparaíso‑San Antonio health service (SSVSA) also issued guidance on managing anxiety, fear and sleep disturbances caused by the emergency.
