Power Restored in Jammu & Kashmir’s Poonch District After Flood‑Damaged Grid

After ten days of outage caused by severe flash floods and heavy rainfall on July 19, the 132 kV electricity grid in Poonch district, Jammu and Kashmir, was fully restored. The floods washed away two to three transmission towers between Rajouri and Thanna Mandi, disrupting power for the entire district.

Altaf Ahmad Khan, In‑charge Executive Engineer of the Power Development Department, said the collapsed towers were rebuilt using an Emergency Restoration System, allowing the district to receive its full power allocation. He added that temporary supplies had kept emergency services running but were insufficient for the full load. The same rainstorm also triggered landslides that heavily damaged the Thannamandi‑DKG‑Bufliaz road, a key Border Roads Organisation project linking the border districts with the Kashmir Valley.
