Power to Hydrogen begins commercial green hydrogen production in Belgium

Power to Hydrogen Inc. (P2H2) has commenced commercial green hydrogen production at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges in Belgium. The company is utilizing a 500 kW system featuring two 250 kW anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyzer stacks. This deployment represents the first commercial use of 250 kW AEM stacks, which are significantly larger than the 2 kW to 25 kW stacks typically found in conventional AEM systems.

The system is expected to produce up to 70 tons of green hydrogen annually, primarily serving regional gas supplier Holthausen and other local customers in the mobility and chemical sectors. To maintain cost-competitiveness, the system is designed to operate between 10% and 100% capacity, allowing it to ramp production up or down based on Belgium’s day-ahead electricity prices.

The project is supported by the European Regional Development Fund and the Flemish innovation and entrepreneurship fund. P2H2 is currently using data from this deployment to prepare for larger multi-MW systems. Additionally, a second 500 kW system is scheduled for delivery to the Norwegian research institute SINTEF later this year.
