Powerbank safety concerns trigger recalls and regulatory crackdowns

Safety concerns regarding lithium-ion powerbanks have prompted both specific product recalls and large-scale regulatory actions. In Germany, Ploonk B.V. has issued a recall for Imoshion brand powerbanks sold through retailers including Kaufland and MediaMarkt. The manufacturer warns that the batteries can overheat during the charging process without visible external signs, posing a significant fire risk. Consumers are advised to stop using or charging the devices immediately and store them away from flammable materials.

On a broader scale, China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) has revoked or suspended over 4,200 safety certificates for powerbanks and lithium batteries. This crackdown follows reports of fires and instances where manufacturers substituted certified components with cheaper, unverified cells. As part of a wider sweep, SAMR has also penalized 131 violations by testing agencies, resulting in fines totaling approximately 2.08 million euros.
