PowerCo rejects Chinese Gotion taking control of Sagunto battery plant
Volkswagen's battery subsidiary PowerCo has said it will not hand over control of its planned gigafactory in Sagunto, Spain, despite reports that Chinese battery maker Gotion was in advanced talks to become a partner or majority shareholder. The company confirmed it is evaluating strategic collaborations but insists PowerCo will retain ownership of the site.
The Sagunto plant, scheduled for pre‑production in December 2026 and series production in summer 2027, will produce standardized cells for Volkswagen Group electric models built in the Iberian Peninsula. Gotion already supplies cells from China for the VW ID Polo and Cupra Raval assembled in Spain. PowerCo emphasised that any future cooperation will not affect its control of the investment, which it describes as one of the group’s most important European battery projects.
