Powerful cyclone expected to form over the Black Sea
A powerful cyclone is expected to form over the Black Sea, approximately 300–400 kilometers from Burgas. According to Meteo Balkans, the storm is projected to intensify significantly, with the most severe meteorological phenomena anticipated over northern Turkey.
In the Istanbul region, strong winds are forecast, while coastal areas in the northeast, including Zonguldak and Amasra, may experience extremely powerful gusts. In the worst-case scenario, wind speeds could reach 150–180 km/h. Turkish meteorological services have issued an orange code for dangerous atmospheric phenomena in Istanbul, the Marmara Sea region, and the Black Sea region.
Meteorologists are monitoring the potential development of a “sting jet,” a rare meteorological event where a narrow stream of air descends from the middle layers of the atmosphere, potentially causing localized, destructive wind speeds. The cyclone is expected to develop during the evening of Saturday, October 17, reaching its most intense phase during the night and early morning hours of Sunday, October 18.
