POWERGRID acquires Barmer HVDC Power Transmission Limited

Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) has acquired 100% of Barmer HVDC Power Transmission Limited for approximately INR 18.98 crore. The acquisition, conducted through a tariff-based competitive bidding process, enables the development of a 6,000 MW interstate transmission system designed to evacuate renewable energy from the Rajasthan REZ Phase-IV Barmer Complex.

The project will be developed on a build, own, operate, and transfer (BOOT) basis. It involves establishing ±800 kV HVDC terminals at Barmer-II in Rajasthan and South Kalamb in Maharashtra, connected by a roughly 1,000-km HVDC bipole transmission line traversing Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. The scope also includes 400 kV transmission lines in Rajasthan and the installation of two synchronous condenser units.

Additionally, REC Power Development and Consultancy Limited (RECPDCL) handed over two special purpose vehicles (SPVs) to successful bidders on September 23, 2026. Alongside the Barmer project awarded to POWERGRID, the Sakoli Power Transmission Limited SPV, an intra-state project in Maharashtra, was handed over to Ashoka Buildcon Limited.
