Powys County Council faces potential primary school closures
Powys County Council is facing potential primary school closures as it struggles with significant financial instability. During a Governance and Audit Committee meeting, officials discussed the need to redirect funds to support secondary schools, which currently face a collective deficit of £6.5 million.
The council is working to address long-term funding issues following a critical report from the education watchdog Estyn. A Panel Performance Assessment highlighted concerns regarding the authority’s financial sustainability, noting that education pressures reflect broader complexities in the council’s medium-term financial strategy.
Council leader Cllr Jake Berriman attributed these challenges to demographic shifts, including an ageing population and a declining number of children entering the school system, which has led to a disproportionate distribution of funding.
