Powys County Council faces scrutiny over road gritting and school closure votes

Powys County Council is facing scrutiny over local governance and maintenance policies. Regarding winter safety, the council defended its decision not to routinely grit the B4518 road between Tylwch and Llanidloes. While the route is vital for school transport, carers, and farmers, it is classified as a “Community Route,” meaning it is only treated during significant or severe weather. Cabinet member Jackie Charlton stated that the council must prioritize resources across its extensive network and cannot guarantee all roads remain ice-free.

Separately, a motion has been proposed to change how school closures are decided in the county. Currently, the cabinet holds the power to approve closures, such as the proposed closure of Gladestry Church in Wales Primary School. Opposition councillors have moved to amend the council's constitution so that all 68 councillors can vote on such decisions, arguing that the current system lacks democratic accountability. The proposal seeks to return to a system where final decisions are made at full council meetings rather than solely by the cabinet.
