Powys health board proposes major cuts to community hospital beds
The Powys Teaching Health Board has unveiled proposals that could significantly reduce the number of physical health inpatient beds across the region. Currently, 146 beds are distributed among eight community hospitals, but new plans suggest concentrating these services at either three sites—Brecon, Llandrindod Wells, and Newtown—or just two sites, Brecon and Newtown.
Under these proposals, inpatient beds would be removed from Ystradgynlais, Welshpool, Llanidloes, Machynlleth, and Bronllys. The restructuring also includes the potential closure of Minor Injury Units at Ystradgynlais and Welshpool, alongside the removal of X-ray services from Ystradgynlais, Welshpool, and Machynlleth. Additionally, adult and older adult inpatient mental health services would be consolidated into a single location within the Bronllys or Brecon area.
Local politicians, including Liberal Democrat MP David Chadwick and Senedd Member Jane Dodds, have criticized the plans, accusing the health board of hoodwinking residents. They argue the consultation process is flawed, presenting a choice between different levels of service centralization rather than genuine options for maintaining local care. Local councillors in Llanidloes have also described the consultation as a sham, noting that most viable options for maintaining local beds appear to have been removed.
