Poznan University of Technology engineers develop automated bee monitoring system

Engineers from Poznan University of Technology in Poland have developed an automated system to monitor the lives of honeybees. The project involves three beehives located on the university's roof, housing approximately 45,000 bees.

The system utilizes cameras, microphones, and various sensors to provide live data and visual feeds of the hive's internal and external activities. This includes monitoring the landing hangar, honey storage, and the bees' movements. The technology is intended to serve as a foundation for scientific research.

Developing the system took over a year as engineers had to adapt to natural challenges, such as bees covering camera lenses with wax. According to engineers Marcin Skrzyszewski and Jarosław Derda, the bees have shown an unexpected tendency to cluster around the internal cameras.
