Pozzallo Municipality and IACP clash over public housing status

A dispute has escalated between the Municipality of Pozzallo and the IACP regarding the state of public housing at Piazzale Italia. Mayor Roberto Ammatuna has accused the Institute of providing insufficient responses concerning the maintenance and future of the residential lots.

Following a 2024 decision to revoke an evacuation order for lots 12, 13, and 14, certain conditions were set, including biennial structural inspections and the construction of new buildings to relocate residents. The Mayor claims that while the IACP confirmed inspections were conducted, the results were never shared with the municipality. Furthermore, the Mayor noted a lack of progress on new housing projects, regional funding searches, and essential maintenance, such as plaster repairs and a broken elevator in lot 16 that has been out of service since January 2026.

IACP Commissioner Giovanni Moscato has dismissed these accusations as “attacchi strumentali” (instrumental attacks) intended to create media clamor. Moscato maintained that structural checks were performed correctly and noted that the proposed €10 million plan for new buildings cannot be funded by the Institute's own resources. The IACP has indicated availability for a clarifying meeting only after September 12, 2026.
