PP‑União Brasil federation chooses neutrality in Brazil's 2026 presidential election

The federation formed by the Progressistas (PP) and União Brasil announced that it will remain neutral in the 2026 presidential race, avoiding any formal endorsement of pre‑candidate Flávio Bolsonaro (PL). The decision was communicated by PP senator Ciro Nogueira to Bolsonaro on 22 July and follows a meeting of party leaders on 21 July, just before the coalition‑registration deadline of 5 August. Party officials said neutrality allows state‑level directories to support candidates of their choosing – whether from the right, the government led by President Luiz Inácio Lula, or others such as Ronaldo Caiado – and preserves existing regional alliances.

Government representatives, including minister José Guimarães and PT president Edinho Silva, reportedly pressed the federation to adopt a neutral stance to limit Bolsonaro’s access to national campaign advertising and to protect Lula’s electoral base. The move forces Bolsonaro to seek alternative partners, with reports that the Republicanos and Podemos are being approached. The neutral stance has been described by Bolsonaro’s camp as a “tragedy” and is seen as a setback for his effort to build a nationwide centrão coalition.

The federation plans to formalise the neutral position in the coming days, and it may be maintained through a possible second‑round vote.
