DEI and Metlen expand energy storage footprint in Southeast Europe

DEI and Metlen are accelerating their joint energy storage strategy, targeting the development of up to 1,500 MW of battery capacity and 3,000 MWh of storage across Romania, Bulgaria, and Italy. The first phase of this partnership is expected to deliver 300-500 MW of battery projects by the first quarter of 2027.

This expansion is part of a broader €11.8 billion investment program through 2030, aimed at creating a regional energy market. The strategy includes adding 1.5 to 2 GW of renewable energy capacity annually in Greece and Eastern Europe, focusing on solar, wind, and flexible production to address the growing need for grid stability.

In Greece, the Ministry of Environment and Energy is preparing four subsidy programs with a total budget of €200 million to support battery storage for businesses, municipalities, and investors. Meanwhile, the GREGY project, an interconnection between Greece and Egypt, aims to complete studies by early 2028, with the potential to reduce wholesale energy prices by 25%.
