PPD-Independientes caucus criticizes government constitutional security process

The PPD-Independientes parliamentary caucus has criticized the government for initiating a new constitutional process regarding security matters. Led by Deputy Andrea Parra, the group described the move as a “despropósito” (absurdity), arguing that the administration should focus on operational management and concrete criminal prosecution tools against organized crime instead of constitutional changes.

Parra highlighted an inconsistency in the government's stance, noting that while the administration previously defended the 1980 Constitution, it is now seeking constitutional reform. She suggested the political shift stems from fears regarding the Constitutional Court and the potential for proposed norms to be ruled unconstitutional.

Deputy Jaime Araya also called for an end to what he termed “legislative pyrotechnics,” urging the government to prioritize practical security measures. He noted that current proposals lack focus on critical areas such as maritime borders, increased patrols, aerial border security, and addressing issues like narco-planes and narco-lawyers.
