Prabowo forms BPGMN to manage peatlands and prevent forest fires
President Prabowo Subianto has approved the establishment of the National Peatland and Mangrove Management Agency (BPGMN), a new body that will report directly to the President. The agency is designed to strengthen the prevention of forest and land fires (karhutla) through science-based management, involving researchers and professionals to ensure policies are driven by comprehensive data.
To support this initiative, the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) will deploy advanced AI technology to improve the early detection of fire hotspots. The government also plans to empower local communities through the revitalization of Fire Care Groups (Masyarakat Peduli Api) to provide a village-based defense against fires.
As part of this strategy, President Prabowo has called for urgent regulatory reforms to close legal loopholes. He specifically targeted eight regional regulations that currently permit individuals to burn up to two hectares of land for agricultural clearing, labeling such provisions as a significant risk to fire control. Additionally, the administration intends to increase oversight of corporations to ensure they adhere to mandatory fire prevention infrastructure requirements.
