UN Security Council condemns Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia

The UN Security Council has issued a presidential statement strongly condemning the escalating Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia. The Council specifically highlighted strikes targeting civilian infrastructure, including King Khalid International Airport on October 10 and 11, and Saudi Aramco energy facilities, which resulted in multiple casualties.

In addition to condemning the attacks, the Council emphasized the importance of protecting commercial shipping in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait. Members called for the full implementation of Security Council Resolution 2216 (2015) and urged practical international cooperation to prevent the Houthis from obtaining weapons, technical assistance, training, or funding.

Saudi Arabia welcomed the statement, affirming its inherent right to self-defense under international law to protect its citizens and national security. The Council also reaffirmed its support for UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg’s efforts to achieve a Yemeni-led political settlement, stressing that lasting peace cannot be achieved through violence or coercion.
