Indonesia proposes limited dual citizenship for skilled diaspora

During the 2027 Draft State Budget and Financial Note presentation, President Prabowo Subianto proposed legislative amendments to allow limited dual citizenship for highly skilled Indonesian diaspora members. The policy targets professionals such as scientists, doctors, engineers, AI experts, researchers, entrepreneurs, artists, and athletes to ensure Indonesia retains its best talent despite their global career or family commitments.

The proposal is intended to be selective and subject to a rigorous screening process to protect national security and strategic interests. While the move aims to strengthen national development, some international law experts have raised concerns regarding its impact on nationalism and potential pragmatic motives.

In other policy areas, the President emphasized digital connectivity as essential infrastructure for equitable development, noting that 4G networks reach nearly 99 percent of the population. He also announced plans to improve healthcare access in remote regions through the provision of air ambulances using helicopters and small planes, as well as deploying mobile medical teams to underserved areas.
