Practical Magic 2 tops North American box office with $30M debut
Practical Magic 2, starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, debuted at number one at the North American box office, earning an estimated $30 million. The sequel to the 1998 cult classic brought in approximately $16 million from 77 international markets, resulting in a worldwide opening weekend of roughly $46 million.
The film’s debut displaced Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which had held the top spot for six consecutive weeks. Spider-Man has now earned approximately $935.2 million domestically and $2.4 billion globally.
Directed by Susanne Bier, Practical Magic 2 follows the Owens sisters as they attempt to break a generational family curse. The production cost an estimated $75 million. While the film’s opening fell at the lower end of Warner Bros.’ projected range of $30 million to $35 million, it has seen strong audience engagement, including a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
