Practical Magic 2: Sequel explores the Owens family curse

The sequel to the 1998 film Practical Magic arrives 28 years after the original. The story follows Sally Owens, played by Sandra Bullock, who has raised her daughters, Kylie and Antonia, in a Puritan fashion to distance them from the Owens family curse.

The plot expands the universe beyond Massachusetts, as Kylie, played by Joey King, seeks to break the ancient curse through a spellbook that leads her to England. The new cast includes Maisie Williams as Antonia, Lee Pace as Professor Ian, and Xolo Maridueña as Gideon.

While the sequel is noted for expanding the scope of the original, critics point to a flatter storyline. The absence of original character Gary Hallett is addressed by revealing his death, a narrative choice that has drawn scrutiny regarding the handling of the original film's romantic elements.
