Prado Museum launches engineering-focused art itinerary
The Museo Nacional del Prado has introduced a new thematic itinerary titled ‘La ingeniería en el Prado: un puente entre el arte y la técnica’ (Engineering in the Prado: a bridge between art and technique). Developed in collaboration with the Fhecor Foundation, the exhibition examines 29 works from the museum's permanent collection to highlight civil engineering elements such as bridges, ports, roads, and mills.
The exhibition is organized into three distinct blocks based on the prominence of the infrastructure: works where engineering is the primary subject, works where infrastructure serves as a backdrop or context, and works where these elements appear only as subtle background details. The collection features artists ranging from Antonio Joli and Rafael to El Greco and Goya.
Curators Francisco Javier Fernández and Javier León aim to encourage visitors to observe paintings through a technical lens, questioning the artist's intent behind the inclusion of these structures. The itinerary will be available for viewing until February 21, 2027.
