Europe transitions to winter time amid health and safety debates
On the night of October 24–25, 2026, numerous European countries, including Spain, Greece, Ireland, Poland, Slovenia, and Germany, will transition from summer time to winter time by setting clocks back one hour. While this provides an extra hour of sleep, the shift brings earlier sunsets and shorter daylight hours.
Health experts warn that the change can disrupt circadian rhythms, leading to fatigue, sleep disturbances, and reduced concentration. In Austria, the VCÖ has warned of increased risks for pedestrians and motorists due to reduced visibility, noting that November historically sees a spike in accidents. Additionally, the shift in light patterns can influence wildlife behavior and agricultural cycles.
Despite ongoing discussions within the European Union to abolish seasonal time changes—a proposal supported by the European Commission in 2018 and advocated by the Spanish government to protect public health and energy efficiency—member states have yet to reach a consensus. Consequently, the biannual adjustment remains mandatory under current EU directives.
