Prague Archdiocese halts plans to sell Jindřišská Tower
The Prague Archdiocese has announced that it no longer plans to sell the historic Gothic Jindřišská Tower. Although the property was offered for sale in 2022 due to high maintenance costs, Archbishop Stanislav Přibyl stated that the church does not need to monetize all of its assets and that there are values beyond purely financial or entrepreneurial ones.
In 2022, approximately 30 bidders, including the City of Prague, expressed interest in the tower, with some offers exceeding 100 million CZK. However, the sale did not proceed. The decision comes amid discussions regarding the long-term financial stability of the church as it prepares for the end of state support. Under current laws, state contributions to church operations will cease in 2030, with property compensation payments continuing until 2042.
Archbishop Přibyl expressed confidence in the archdiocese's strategic planning and ability to remain self-sufficient through investments in rental housing and other activities, ensuring that personnel and maintenance costs can be met after the transition period.
