Prague City Council adopts new metropolitan urban plan

On 20 May 2026 the Prague City Council voted eight out of eleven members to approve a new metropolitan spatial development plan for the capital. Critics describe the plan as heavily influenced by developers, arguing it prioritises private investment over public interests such as heritage protection, environmental sustainability and health. The proposed framework would replace the existing 1999 plan, which has been criticized for frequent, investor‑driven amendments and inadequate infrastructure provisions. Proponents say the new plan aims to coordinate land use, housing and urban services for the growing city, but opposition parties fear it will lock large areas of the city into developer‑friendly zoning.

The decision follows extensive public debate and protests, with opponents warning that without a balanced plan, up to a third of Prague’s territory could remain unregulated and subject to speculative development.
