Prague commuter trains face overcrowding following fleet failures
Commuter trains serving the Prague region experienced significant disruption following the failure of multiple train units. The shortage of rolling stock, including CityElefant and RegioPanter units, forced the use of shorter train sets, leading to severe overcrowding on lines such as S1, S7, and S9.
České dráhy (Czech Railways) attributed the shortage to a combination of technical faults, vandalism, and ongoing installations of camera systems and the European Train Control System (ETCS). Additionally, some units were sidelined for mandatory heavy maintenance. Experts noted that the CityElefant fleet is approximately 25 years old, which impacts availability.
The Central Bohemian Region (Středočeský kraj) has criticized the situation as unacceptable and is preparing to impose contractual sanctions on Czech Railways. Officials expect fines to reach hundreds of thousands of koruna, depending on the total number of canceled or reduced-capacity services.
