Prague plans new Metro E tangential line to connect outer districts
Prague is advancing plans for a new tangential transit route, tentatively named Metro E. The Prague City Council is scheduled to vote on September 7 regarding a public tender for a feasibility study to determine the most efficient route and technology for this fifth line.
Unlike the existing radial metro system that funnels passengers through the city center, Metro E is designed to connect outer districts such as Smíchov, Prague 4, Bohdalec, Vysočany, and Letňany. The proposed route could span approximately 22 kilometers. Officials suggest the new connection could significantly reduce travel times; for example, a trip between Bohdalec and the Žižkov Freight Station could drop from 25 minutes to roughly 3.5 minutes.
In a separate development, the Prague Transport Company (DPP) has awarded a 12.85 million CZK contract to a consortium including Metroprojekt Praha, Sudop Praha, and Mott MacDonald CZ. This contract covers a feasibility study for extending the existing Metro Line D from Náměstí Míru toward Náměstí Republiky, which would include new transfer stations to lines B and C and connections to regional rail hubs.
