Prague police arrest man for sending dozens of threatening emails

Czech police have arrested and charged a 39-year-old man for sending at least 36 threatening and alarmist emails between August 23 and September 11, 2026. The messages targeted various groups and locations, including threats to kill a class of first-grade students, threats against doctors and medical staff, and warnings directed at university students and the general public in central Prague.

One specific threat on August 27 regarding an explosion at the Old Town Astronomical Clock triggered a major security response. This incident required the evacuation of approximately 650 people and a thorough pyrotechnic inspection of the area.

The suspect was apprehended upon arriving in Prague by train and has been placed in custody following a court decision. An expert examination found no mental illness that would exempt him from criminal responsibility. He faces charges of violence against individuals and groups, as well as spreading alarmist messages, which carry a potential prison sentence of up to three years.
