Prague Pride Tightens Security After Berlin Attack, Sparking Wider European Pride Safeguards
Prague Pride’s 2026 edition will relocate its main festival zone from the Letná Plain to Štvanice Island, with the Saturday parade starting at the lower part of Wenceslas Square, passing the historic centre and ending on the island. Organisers will open the march with a minute of silence to honour the victim of the Berlin Pride attack. Czech police will deploy several hundred officers from order, traffic and criminal units, as well as a police helicopter, to monitor the entire route. Traffic through the city centre—from Wenceslas Square to the Štvanice area—will be restricted between approximately 12:00 and 17:00 on parade day.
Police spokesperson Eva Kropáčová said the heightened measures respond to the recent van‑ramming in Berlin that killed one person and injured dozens. Interior Minister Lubomír Metnar added that Czech authorities do not want any incident reminiscent of Berlin to occur in the Czech Republic.
Across Europe, other Pride festivals are also emphasizing security. Brighton and Hove Pride in the United Kingdom, marking its 35th anniversary, will foreground the Berlin attack as a central theme and retain armed police presence. Organisers in Helsingborg, Sweden, noted the Berlin incident but reported no specific threat to their upcoming parade.
