Prague Zoo cheetah cubs survive storms and mother's illness
Five cheetah cubs born at the Prague Zoo on June 18 are reported to be doing well after surviving severe weather and their mother's illness. The quintuplets, consisting of four males and one female, faced significant challenges shortly after birth when torrential rains hit the region.
The mother, Daenerys, protected the cubs from the storms by licking water from their fur to prevent pneumonia, a common cause of mortality in the wild. Adding to the difficulty, Daenerys suffered from an intestinal infection in August.
Despite these setbacks, zoo curator Pavel Brandl stated that the cubs appeared lively and healthy as of Friday. However, he noted that “it’s still a long run,” suggesting it may take a year to determine if they will survive the most critical period of their development. Conservationists emphasize that every cub is vital for the survival of the species, as fewer than 7,000 cheetahs remain in the wild.
