Prague's Čechovo Square set for 300 million CZK overhaul

The Prague‑10 district approved a redesign of Svatopluka Čecha Square after an architectural competition. Studio ra15 won with a plan that adds a large number of trees, a rain‑water collection system, a water feature, a café, public toilets and spaces for events. The proposal aims to make the square a “green lung” for Vršovice, improve micro‑climate and provide shade during increasingly hot summers.

The competition, launched in February, received 21 submissions and involved more than 650 local residents. An expert jury of city officials and independent architects selected the winning concept, which balances paved and unpaved areas and respects the historic layout created by Josef Gočár in 1930. The reconstruction budget is estimated at about 300 million Czech crowns (≈ 13 million USD) and includes upgrades to adjacent streets. Work is expected to begin in the next year, with the aim of delivering a functional, climate‑responsive public space for the district’s inhabitants.
