Páramo conservation and water security summits held in Colombia and Ecuador
Regional summits and national meetings are addressing the conservation of páramo ecosystems and water security in South America.
In Bucaramanga, Colombia, the Fifth World Summit on Páramos and Water Security is scheduled for October 1 and 2 at Neomundo. The event will bring together researchers, authorities, and community representatives to discuss biodiversity, climate change, and the protection of strategic ecosystems. A central focus will be the Santurbán Páramo, which is vital for water supply in the Santander region.
In Ecuador, the VIII National Meeting of Community Water Management was held at the Universidad Indoamérica in Latacunga. Organized by the Network of Social and Community Organizations in Water Management (Roscgae), the meeting highlighted water as a fundamental human right. Discussions included strategies for conserving páramos, wetlands, and forests, specifically focusing on projects in the Tungurahua highlands aimed at reducing poverty through environmental conservation and improved water governance.
