Páramo de Guerrero conservation agreement signed in Colombia
The Government of Cundinamarca, the municipality of Zipaquirá, and the Western Páramo de Guerrero Community Action Board have signed an agreement to strengthen environmental conservation in the region. The agreement incorporates 208.61 hectares into the Payments for Environmental Services (PSA) program.
This initiative provides periodic economic incentives to local farming families in exchange for maintaining practices focused on the protection, restoration, and sustainable use of the soil. The program aims to prevent land use that could disrupt the ecological balance of the páramo while generating income for rural communities that protect water sources and biodiversity.
Diego Cárdenas Chala, the Secretary of Green Wellbeing of Cundinamarca, stated that while territorial protection requires commitment from all sectors, institutions must create the necessary conditions for families to obtain economic benefits from their environmental actions.
